Los ocho cazaminas de la clase Gaeta son considerados por algunos como una subclase de los cazaminas clase Lerici, ya que están basados en estos con ligeras modificaciones. Las principales diferencias con los Lerici son un aumento en el desplazamiento y en el tamaño del casco, el mástil de comunicaciones se ha movido desde la parte superior del puente al frente de la chimenea y disponen de equipos tácticos y de sonar más modernos. Fueron construidos con un tipo particular de fibra de vidrio que les permite ser absolutamente amagnéticos y no ser perjudicados por las corrientes de Foucault. El casco tiene un grosor de 120 mm lo que les permite una buena resistencia a las explosiones submarinas y al impacto contra el casco de las consiguientes ondas de choque. Estos cazaminas han servido como base para otros buques de Malasya, Estados Unidos, Nigeria o Australia. Entre los años 2010 y 2018 las unidades han sufrido cambios en su casco y se les ha modernizado el sonar, el sistema de gestión de combate, la cámara hiperbárica y los vehículos EMDV.
